The Cattle  phase is designed to demonstrate the well-rounded horse and rider in the task of  ranching work with cattle. The cattle trial  uses a team of 3 or 4 riders who must cut numbered cattle from a herd one at a time, in order, and herd them into a holding pen. This event is timed.
